Recently, I was chatting to a group of friends and we were chatting about the coming year, what we were excited about and what we had planned. One of the most striking elements of this conversation was that most of the people in the group didn’t have any plans except the usual – work, pay bills, maybe have a holiday and maybe go to a wedding or two.
It got me thinking – when did we stop dreaming and more importantly, when did we stop dreaming BIG??
It was quite a jarring experience. There is so much in the news about the Mayan calendar and the supposed ‘end of the world’ (if you’re reading this after the 21st of December, phew – we made it!) and yet we continue living as if we have all the time in the world to do all the things we want. When we really think about it, we tend to frame our dreams in the future tense. There’s no sense of urgency and no sense of “if not now, then when?” The problem is when you phrase it in the future, it stays in the future and you never ‘get there’.
This is a great quote from a favourite writer of mine, Wayne Dyer:
“Don’t die with your music still inside you”
As we enjoy the festivities of the holiday period; whatever you’re doing, I hope you’re having a lovely time. Please be kind to yourself and give yourself the best gift ever – time and space to dream big and make it happen!
