I’m back from a gorgeous day out with my eldest boy and it was such a treat to spend one-on-one time with him.

To talk, to share and to enjoy each other’s company.

We went to Blackpool Tower Dungeon – he was terrified! – then we had fish and chips on the beach!

It was fabulous!

As our kids get older, I can see them craving this kind of connection from me and their dad.

They want our attention, they want to talk about what’s on their mind and they want to make sense of their world.

It means the world to them and to us (tomorrow I’m taking little miss for our one-on-one time – we’re going for tea & cake!)

And it got me thinking about something that I’ve been thinking about A LOT recently!

You know I’m a fierce advocate of creating income streams like online courses.

It’s a great way to make the most of your tiny time.

But I have seen too many people (including me) buy a course and never do anything with it.

It gathers dust on the old hard drive….maybe you might watch one module or two but it’s a very small percentage of people who actually finish and implement what they’ve learnt.

And you might trick yourself into thinking you’ve learnt something useful but the real transformation is when you implement.

When you take the knowledge and put it into action.

Which is why it’s time to call quits on the online course ‘self-study’ method.

Because just like my children craving one-on-one connection with me and their dad, I can see hungry people out there feasting on the learning equivalent of junk food – online course after online course – but not making the progress they want.

When I think about the results my clients (and me) have created in the past, it’s when they have invested in personalised and tailored coaching and mentoring.

When they can take the information and make sense of it for their business (in my case).

Implement quickly, course correct and make big leaps.

Before you say it, yes, the investment for one-on-one mentoring is greater than an online course but when you add a $197 up and a $297 and a $497 – it all adds up.

Most of the time, it’s a false economy.

You get a false high of buying the course, you think it’s going to be the magic pill and then you start the course, life gets busy, you get distracted and your enthusiasm wanes.

And you’re left feeling hungry like when you’ve had a fast food meal.

***If you’re buying an online course and you’re dazzled by the testimonials, be aware of how they got the results – did they do the course or did they get one-on-one support?***

One on one beats self study courses every time!

From my experience (17+years), I see people thrive in one-on-one and small groups (that’s why I love working this way)

Instead of fumbling with an online self study course.

Struggling to make sense of something that could be resolved with one question.

I really do believe it’s time we stop gorging on the learning equivalent of junk food and do work that creates a result (I’ve put a stop to my own self study course buying too!)

What do you do instead?

Focus on the work that creates a result.

For example, an online program can help you create that result with your clients.

Here’s the thing – just because you’re not selling an online course doesn’t mean you’re stuck trading time for money.

It’s about getting creative with

  • How you deliver your program.
  • How you serve your clients at the deep level they crave – and be honest, the way you want to serve your community.
  • And how you make the most of your time and increase your income.

One on one work need not be a drain on your time, energy and passion.

Done right, it can make a world of difference to your clients.

P.S. Long story cut short – online courses that are self study don’t create a result simply because people don’t finish them. Create an online program and deliver it in a group setting or use it as part of your premium one-on-one work and build your business on helping your clients actually get results!
